Julia's Entrepreneurial Journey

With a background in business development with corporate giant Reuters, Julia managed major investment banking clients including as Morgan Stanley and Deutsche Bank, and delivered global marketing and technology projects in both London and Singapore.

But when the dot.com boom kicked off in the late 90's, Julia saw her chance to be a part of the revolution, so she took her first leap into the start-up world and never looked back. Joining pioneering local information website UpMyStreet.com as Business Development Director, it wasn't long before the business was sold to uSwitch.com and Julia was running it as a subsidiary business, with the company ultimately being bought out by property data giant Zoopla.

Julia's first solo venture was DigitalSpringboard, a consultancy business supporting SMEs in taking their businesses online, helping founders capitalise on the opportunities this could bring them. She also consulted for Webface Technology VC, working with fledgling portfolio businesses to help them maximise their commercial potential and build shareholder value, as well as looking at potential new investments for the group.

In 2009, Julia, with her sister and business partner Katy, co-founded award-winning luxury design-your-own shoe label Upper Street. Upper Street enjoyed instant success, appearing at London Fashion Week, with thousands of customers and high-profile clients including Helena Bonham Carter, Tess Daly, Carey Mulligan, Darcey Bussell and supermodel Erin O’Connor.

In the early days of Upper Street, the business was financed by the co-founders. Julia then secured £300,000 investment from an angel investor, and further funding from an institutional lender.

In early 2014 Julia secured £750,000 of private equity investment from venture capital fund Venrex along with the British Business Bank.

This allowed Julia to rapidly expand her team, open her first retail store, and acquire their American competitors Milk & Honey, making Upper Street a truly global brand.

Additional VC and angel funding followed to continue expansion and website development.
In 2015, Julia crowdfunded a further round of investment of £230,000 on Seedrs - the first luxury fashion brand to do this - enabling the brand to secure hundreds of new investors and scale the business further.

The brand was acquired by the Australian footwear brand Shoes of Prey in 2015.

As part of her mission to support women entrepreneurs, Julia now not only provides high-level coaching solely for female founders, but also invests in exclusively exclusively in female-led businesses as an angel investor directly, and via crowdfunding.
